Nestled along the beautiful coastline of Ericeira, Praia do Matadouro is an idyllic beach perfect for surfing, but also for relaxing. Popular among locals, vacationers and surfers, this rocky beach is abundant in tidal pools (when the tide goes down) and makes it an ideal spot for surfers of all levels. However, even though it looks like a beach break, in reality is more a reef spot, with sand moving in & out of the ocean
This spot is included in the World Surfing Reserve from Ericeira.
Surf tips for Matadouro
When surfing at Praia do Matadouro, it’s important to bear a few things in mind:
- The best conditions for this spot come from east winds together with northwest swells
- Keep an eye out for moderate swells (around 1,5 meters) to get the best experience, since these conditions make the waves suitable for all levels of surfing (total beginners looking for powerful white wash or advanced surfers looking for high quality waves)
- The best tide in Matadouro is mid tide. At high tide waves do not break and at low tide the reef is too exposed to surf safely.
- Be aware of different reefs and rocks that come to surface when the water level starts to be too low
How is it like surfing at Praia do Matadouro
Praia do Matadouro has become especially popular among newbie surfers as its waves offer ideal conditions for taking surfing lessons.
For advanced surfers, with a moderate swell it can accommodate up to 2 meter waves and still offer qood quality waves without being too messy. As well it is a great spot for beginners to try out their skills. It’s also perfect for intermediate surfers who prefer a bit of a wild yet peaceful atmosphere. To help you make the most of your experience quite a few surf schools offer lessons and board rentals.
Main peaks at Matadouro
There are two main peaks at Matadouro:
- Matadouro main peak is situated on the left side of the main rock in front of the spot. Surfers mainly choose the right shoulder, but sometimes left shoulders are surfable too.
- Paparucos is a right hand wave situated on the right side of Matadouro beach, a little bit outside of the bay situated on the right side of the spot.
Services: food truck & other amenities
On top of the amazing waves and safety of the beach, Praia do Matadouro also offers great amenities to visitors. There’s a small food truck located above the beach with a lovely view, perfect for grabbing an espresso, cold beer, hot dogs, salads and other delicious snacks. In addition, there are also outdoor showers and toilets available, as well as mobile sanitation facilities during the bathing season.
