Surf spot description

Praia da Amoreira is a beautiful river beach and surf spot located in the region of Algarve, Portugal. The beach is situated along the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean, stretching north-south direction, and is known for its strong waves and consistent surf, making it a popular destination for surfers and bodyboarders.

Description of the spot

Amoreira can have surf all year round if there are swells coming in. Since it is a beach break, peaks usually appear everywhere, depending on how the sandbanks move. As well, since the river can bring out more sand when it rains, there are usually stable peaks a couple hundred meters in front of the river mouth. When Amoreiras is working and is a bit big, there might be some currents and you may have to go full power on paddling and duck diving since the sets do not give you a rest till you reach the outside.

Best swells for Amoreira are west and northwest, and can have surf during any tides: the lowest the tide the most far away the waves will break. However, since it is a very open beach, it can come too messy when the swells get a bit too strong. During low tide some rocks and reefs may get exposed, be careful.

As we said, Praia da Amoreira is a river beach, and it offers a long and beautiful sandy area with dunes that enters inland for hundreds of meters following the riveira of Aljezur. May be worth checking it you fancy a long walk along the sand.

Access to the spot

The main access to the spot can be made easily on the north part of it. If you want to access through the south (from Monte Clérigo side) you will have to climb down the cliff with your board. If the river or the tides have brought water inland you may have to jump from the cliff into the river to reach the beach.

The surroundings

The beach is located within the protected area of the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park, just a few hundred meters away from Monte Clérigo beach. In the area the biggest town is Aljezur, known for its medieval castle, its cobblestone streets and its rich cultural heritage. Main services are also located there.

Services in this spot

There are two restaurants/cafes at the beach, one on each end of the spot (north and south), where you can enjoy a refreshing drink or quick meal. On both ends there are parkings too.
