Surf spot description

Crazy Left is a lesser-known but equaly respected left-hand point break located on the southern edge of Baía dos Dois Irmãos, where the famous Coxos is located. Coxos and Crazy Left share the bay of Baía dos Dois Irmãos, separated from each other by around 200 meters, with the difference that Coxos is located on the northern side of it, and Crazy Left on the southern side.

When conditions align, Crazy Left delivers fast and hollow sections that reward experienced surfers with long, technical rides, or bodyboarders that manage well inside a barrel.

This spot is a bit unconsistent, so tends to fly under the radar compared to its famous neighbours.

Description of Crazy Left

Crazy Left is a left-breaking point break wave that works with a north-west swell, which wraps into the southern part of the bay and lights up the reef. The wave is known for its speed and hollow sections, especially when there’s enough water moving across the point and leaving the bay.

Crazy Left works best on a mid to higher tide, when the water depth increases a bit over the reef and allows the wave to open properly. Lower tides don’t give a good quality wave.

Because of its exposure and fickle nature, Crazy Left doesn’t work every day. But on the right swell and wind combination, it can easily become one of the most exciting waves in the area of Ericeira.

One notable feature of Crazy Left is that the strong outgoing channel from its neighbor spot, Coxos can interfere with this wave, making it bumpy, inconsistent, or just avoid it from working properly.

This is not a beginner-friendly wave. Fast take-offs, barrels and shifting conditions mean Crazy Left is best suited to advanced surfers, or bodyboarders that know what they are doing.

Crowds

Crowds at Crazy Left are generally lighter than at Coxos, largely because the wave doesn’t work as often and requires more effort (more paddle or walking distance) to access. On average days, it may be surfed by only a handful of locals or knowledgeable visitors who know the spot.

Entry and exit, and hazards

Entry is done paddling across the bay toward the point or walking the shore a bit more south and then jump into the water closer to the spot.

Be aware that walking directly along the rocks can be slippery and there are sea urchins all around, so watch your feet.

Access and services

Access to the spot is done by parking at Coxos. Some local guys come by bicycle or e-bike. The closest town is Ribamar, where you find 2 or 3 restaurants and 2 small supermarkets, and Ericeira town is 5 kilometers south from here.
