Arrifana is a is one of the gems of the Costa Vicentina in Portugal. It is a world-renowned surf spot known for its consistent swell and powerful waves. It is a favorite destination for surfers of all skill levels and all type of surfers: short, bodyboarders and longboarders.
The beach it’s all of it surrounded by cliffs hundreds of meters high, protecting it from the powerful north swells and winds that can make other spots totally unsurfable, specially in winter.
Even being protected by cliffs, it can be a perfect spot for surfers looking for powerful and hollow waves.
It is located 15 minutes from Monte Clérigo beach and 15 kilometers from Aljezur, the main town in the area.
The biggest swells for Arrifana are usually seen during the winter months, when the waves can reach up to three meters (nine feet). During the summer, the swell is usually smaller, but the waves are still fun and rideable (specially with a longboard).
Main waves and peaks
There’s a right wave working almost all the time in the north part of the beach, just in front of the access. Probably that’s where you will see most of the surfers. The middle of the beach and the southern part also offer consistent peaks.

There’s also another right wave, just reserved for pro surfers, known as Kangaroo Point (or Canguru Point). This wave works only with very big swells during winter months. It is situated in the north edge of the beach, in front of the small harbour.
The peak is rocky and dangerous and only very experimented surfers can manage properly.
Here you have a video of Canguru Point in Arrifana working during a big winter swell:
In Arrifana usually the waves are better during mid and low tide. However, check for yourself: depending on swell and wind directions it can work longer.
