Whether you’re just starting out or chasing barrels like a pro, finding the right surf spot can make or break your session. Choosing a wave that matches your skill level isn’t just about having fun—it’s about safety, progression, and enjoyment. Here’s how to pick the perfect spot for your ability.
Before you wax your board or book that flight, ask yourself:
- Beginner: Can you pop up consistently in whitewater? Do you know basic surf etiquette?
- Intermediate: Can you catch green waves, turn, and read a lineup?
- Advanced: Can you handle hollow waves, crowded lineups, and reef breaks?
Be honest—it’ll save you from frustration or worse. Remember to consider if you are going to cold or warm water, using a wetsuit when you are used to sunbathing while surfing in your boardshorts might affect your performance. The other way around is true as well. If you are used to the flotation and rash protection of the wetsuit, going full tropical might feel wierd. Consider as well whether you will take your board or you’ll be with a rental beaten up one, that might affect your abilities.
