The word “cantinho” literally means “small corner” and that’s a short yet perfect description of this spot. The small town of Baleal is located on top of a island connected to land by a short spit of sand. On the south side of this sand spit is where Cantinho is located, on the north side of the main big bay between Peniche and Baleal.
Surf in Cantinho
Cantinho Da Baia has surf very often. This spot works at its best quality with medium/big north or northwest swells, which is the most common swell direction for all the northern half part of the coast of Portugal. The ideal wind direction for having the best waves here is north or north east, which also is a very common to have in the region. Works best around mid tide.
This spot is friendly for all levels of surf, and it is common that schools are here. The vibe is chill, it has consistent waves and is suitable for all levels: Cantinho will give you a fun session no matter your level.
Main peaks in this spot
Cantinho offers lefts and rights, being the second ones the shoulders that have best quality. The main peak is in front of the surf school and beach bar, but depending on the tide, swell size and swell direction, waves can start breaking more far outside and more into the middle of the bay. As well, more into the center of the bay you have another spot that is popular among surfers, but you have to park on another parking closer to there.
