Areia Branca is located aproximately 15 km south of Peniche, and the name of the beach refers also to the small town built around it. Surf in Areia Branca can be a bit unconsistent, but the best thing is that it’s almost never crowded.
Spot description
The beach of Areia Branca is a 100% beach break, very exposed, but even though is not a famous spot at all, it can offer good quality waves if conditions are good. Best season for Areia Branca is usually October till March, when swells are a bit bigger. Since the Peniche peninsula protects it from north swells, it catches less waves compared to other spots around. In summer you can expect it to be almost always flat.
There are no rocks or hazardous elements to highlight on this spot. With big swells there might be big currents that may make you have to paddle hard.
Main peaks at Areia Branca
Areia Branca has multiple peaks working all around the bay, but usually the most consistent one is in front and near the river mouth. The sandbanks may change from season to season, so check the spot yourself before to see where it works best at this specific moment.
Also a bit more north from the main bay the sand disappears and it’s more reef, but surfers do not dare to venture there.
