Peniche and Baleal are a very popular surfing spots and can get pretty crowded. However, there is a place nearby where you can go if you want to avoid the crowds (even in the most busy days).
Located north from Baleal and Peniche, in the Leiria district, Almagreira is well knowned for its consistent waves and stunning views. Almagreira is the perfect spot for surfers from advanced begginers or intermediate level on, and can offer you good sessions when swells are a bit bigger and if you are a more experienced surfer. But no matter your level, Almagreira always welcomes you to come and experience its majestic landscape (check the pictures!).
Main waves and peaks
Almagreira is known for its consistent sandbanks which work almost all year round and mostly around mid tide, but overall it is known for its reliable surfability. There’s a variety of peaks working in this spot, but usually the most consistent one is that in front of the thin rock wall/formation that goes perpendicular to the shore and into the ocean. Since sandbanks change every season, Almagreira can offer peaks in different places.
The best thing from Almagreira is that it works with almost every swell direction, but the best waves are when small-medium swells from west or northwest combine with east or southeast winds.
Surf tips for Almagreira
This spot is mainly a beach break with sandy bottom, but random rocks are spread all around the spot. They can appear here and there if the swells move the sandbanks, so be careful when tide starts to go low. Experienced surfers seeking more challenging waves might also enjoy this spot when swells are big, but you may have to paddle hard to fight the currents.
