Mareta is a small bay facing south situated in the heart of the city of Sagres. It is known also as South Sagres. It is not a prominent surf spot like some other nearby spots like Praia do Tonel and Beliche, but can hold some fun waves, specially in the right side of the bay and with west and southwest swells. It can also wake up with those very big winter northwest swells that ravage the west coast of the Algarve making totally unsurfable, but that can bring waves into this small bay facing south.
Main peak at Praia da Mareta
The main peak at Praia da Mareta is a right wave breaking on the right side of the bay and arriving almost till the shore.
If the swell is not very big and coming west or southwest, you can be sure that Mareta will offer you some nice, decent size waves, and fun times. If the conditions are right, the waves can easily go overhead. However, if Mareta is big it can become bumpy, with peaks appearing everywhere and without noitce, and you may need to really paddle your way out and use your best duck diving skills.
During summer months do not expect too many waves in this spot, since it is mostly flat and the bay is a vacational and sunbathing place for tourists and families.
